Dr. Peter Corcoran has more than 200 technical publications (non-patent) and a citation
impact of 6,000+ on Google Scholar. In addition to his academic career, he is also an
intermittent entrepreneur, industry consultant and compulsive inventor. He is a named
co-inventor on more than 300 granted US patents and over his career he has worked
and consulted with more than 20 SMEs and anumber of larger corporations.

Inventor of the Year Fotonation

The list of Fotonation’s developments in digital imagining cover a wide spectrum – literally.
Their red-eye reduction and face detection inventions are just two of more than 80 products
patented by Dr Corcoran and Dr Bigioi. The judges said that In a fast-moving business, Fotonation
has had a significant effect on the popularity and quality of smartphone camera images.

XtremePush is a location system for detecting mobile devices within an area. Its ability to
work indoors offers great opportunities in areas such as retail consumer applications, by
enhancing understanding of customers and their buying behaviours. The judges saw a big future
for the product, and envisaged a wide range of other applications for its use.

The irremovable cap closure is one that cannot be re-opened, detached or removed, and prevents
contamination and waste. The judges were impressed by the simplicity and effectiveness of the
idea and with thepresentation of the concept.

In designing this product, Omos set out to maximise the co-operation between form and function,
and made careful comparisons of the pros and cons of other bins, including cost and durability.
Judges commented favourably on Omos’ imaginative use of design to improve everyday objects.

 OxyMem is a breakthrough technology to address the global need for energy efficient aeration in
wastewater treatment. Using gas permeable membranes instead of bubbles, it can achieve up to
95% oxygen transfer efficiency, while reducing operating costs by up to 75%. Judges also
remarked on the impressive layout and content of their presentation.

IP R&D Collaboration of the Year Award Sedicii, DERI, Enterprise Ireland

 Sedicii is a technology that eliminates the need to transmit or store security information such as
passwords or credit card details, and greatly reduces vulnerability to fraud and theft. It was
conceptualised over five years of R&D in NUI Galway DERI, and an Enterprise Ireland grant
has facilitated the first stage of production. Judges congratulated the team on gaining a US
patent last year.
